Why We Turn Down Clients
And Why It's Good for You

Most agencies say yes to everyone. We do not. Here is why we turn down work, and why that actually makes us a better partner for the clients we do work with.

Why We Turn Down Clients And Why It's Good for You banner

This might be the most unusual thing you will read on an agency website: we turn down clients. Not often. But intentionally. And we think it is one of the most important things we do.

In an industry where growth is measured in revenue and roster size, saying no feels counterintuitive. But we have learned, sometimes the hard way, that the wrong client relationship is worse than no client relationship.

Reason 1: We Are Not the Right Fit for Every Business

We are good at specific things. We have a clear point of view on what good marketing looks like. We have a process we believe in. We have a style of working and communicating that works well with some clients and poorly with others.

When a client needs something we cannot deliver at the level they deserve, we say so. We would rather refer you to someone better suited to your needs than take your money and deliver mediocre work.

Reason 2: Some Projects Are Not Set Up to Succeed

We have worked on enough projects to recognize the warning signs: unclear goals, unrealistic timelines, internal stakeholders who fundamentally disagree on what they want, or a budget that is too small for the scope being proposed.

When we see these conditions, we flag them. If we cannot work together to fix them before starting, we would rather not start. Taking on a project that is set up to fail does not help you, and it does not reflect well on us.

Reason 3: We Protect Our Team and Our Existing Clients

Bad-fit clients do not just affect the client relationship. They affect the whole agency. When a client relationship is difficult, with constant scope creep, lack of trust, or conflicting communication styles, it drains energy and attention that should be going to clients we are doing great work for.

We take our commitments to existing clients seriously. We will not let new relationships compromise them.

Reason 4: We Believe in What We Are Marketing

We care about the work. That means we prefer to work with products, services, and companies we genuinely respect. When our team believes in what they are marketing, the work is better. The ideas are sharper. The copy has more conviction. The strategy is more committed.

What This Means for You

If you are reading this and worried you might be turned down, do not be. Most businesses we speak with are great fits, and the ones that are not, we tell them early and respectfully.

What our selectivity actually signals is this: when we say yes to you, we mean it. We have thought carefully about whether we can do great work for your business. We are not saying yes because we need the revenue. We are saying yes because we believe we can make a genuine difference.

A Note on Honesty

The agency business does not have a great reputation for saying hard things. Agencies often over-promise to win business, under-deliver on results, and renew contracts through inertia rather than performance.

Turning down clients is part of how we stay honest with ourselves and with the people we work with. If you want an agency that tells you what you need to hear, and backs it up with work that actually delivers, let us talk.
